Asynchronous Transfer Mode networks make use of Statistical Time Division Multiplexing where in the time slots are allotted to user on demand. Considering the age wherein it was conceived, when we never had very intense bandwidth hungry communications such as live streaming or 5G like scenarios, wherein the same network is to take multiple roles. ATM took all these type of highly conflicting requirements in its stride and gave solution to a multitude of networking and communication problems. Through looking at traffic as VBR, CBR, UBR, ABR, it was in a position to perfectly match with the applications it was trying to serve. The so called disappearance of ATM from the networks domain is not due to any flaw of the ATM paradigm. So much of copper has been put up in the world globally and it is just not possible to completely replace the various networks through an all-in-one ATM network. That accounts for the end of an ATM network. But it has many features which are extremely powerful and resource conserving, we can always peek into the nuts and bolts of ATM and probably make almost all our networks as efficient ones, bandwidth conserving and highly suitable for every need.
